Culture Miscommunication

 


What I learned this week is that paradigms cause us to interpret the world around us. Everyone in different cultures sees the world differently, my perception is not the same as Americans, or Africans, Asians because we have been educated differently, but this not mean that I will judge what they think and see with their eyes, and this not mean I will take what they think, or that they need to think like me, is to live in harmony respecting every point of view.

This could happen in an ESL classroom, we will have students around the world that won’t think like me or their classmates, but as teachers, we need to create an environment where everyone feels respected and free to say something and not be judge. How would our students feel if we as teachers start judging their ideas just because they are from another country? How would I feel if someone starts judging me because of my ideas? This will affect our students learning.

Teaching about other cultures in my classroom will help to create a great environment where our students could learn about their classmates and why they think differently, to have empathy with all of them, also me as a teacher to know how to help them with their learning. When I served in Guatemala I saw many differences in my culture Salvadorian but I didn’t judge them I learn about why they do something, why they drink mate, and also learn words that here in El Salvador we can’t say them but in Guatemala means different, etc.

    The differences between one culture or another can be enormous. However, I believe that those same differences allow us to learn about what life is like in other places and at the same time help us understand that even if we have different perspectives we can live together in harmony. Very good post!

    It is interesting learning how different cultures perceive things differently. Yes it is important to teach our students not judge other cultures but to respect them. Enjoyed your post.

    Great post Dany. I agree with what you wrote and have learned so much this week. Most of it was a reminder but it's interesting how easily one can forget. We are so steeped into our own culture, upbringing, experiences, and way of thinking and perceiving that we forget how different it could be for someone else. I will bring this into my TESOL 5 class and speak to my student that I tutor because I want to help as much as I can. :)

    Dany, it is wonderful that you are so thoughtful of others' actions based on the possibility of their culture. As a teacher this is an important part of good communication. You will do great!

  Reading the article Personal Space Ownership I realized that no matter what is your culture we all have this monitor in our brains that keep us aware of the space around our bodies. Why do our minds focus on how close or far people are from us? People can have positive or negative emotions depending on how close you approach to them. Different cultures have distinct: intimate, friend, social and audience zones. Our zone distances may changes depending on where we are and the circumstances we are into. Something that I learned in this article is that when our “air bubble” is invaded we get more anxious and want to protect our personal space. Differences in Manners

  This is an interesting topic, when I was reading I was thinking about some things we do here in El Salvador, and one thing that came into my mind was that when we are walking and we pass in front of some people that are eating we say Provecho that could be translated to have a nice meal, I do not think that Americans have a word that you say when someone is eating, anyway, here in El Salvador is common to say that when a stranger is eating and you pass near them. Another thing that I could think of is that here in El Salvador when we know someone, friends, and family we say hello with a kiss on the cheek, and when I tried to do this in the USA they looked at me like I was insane haha. Also with my friend from Spain, it was weird that they kiss 2 times on the cheek. I read that in Asia, letting tips in a restaurant is an insult, but here in El Salvador is disrespectful to not let tips when the waiter or waitress gave you a good service. Culture Paradigms

  One of the greatest challenge that I feel I might have as I become a teacher, is being disrespectful to someone for something I did without realizing it. Not on purpose.  There will be ab lot of cultural differences if I want to teach and I would need to be prepared for that. Also not having the English language dominated 100% is a challenge as well. On the other side there are great benefits to this and some of these are being able to learn from my students, gain deeper knowledge about the world in general and you get to know marvelous people going through that process of the learning journey and see them succeed. This could occur in an ESL homeroom, we will have understudies all over the planet that won't think like me or their schoolmates, yet as educators, we really want to establish a climate where everybody feels regarded and allowed to say something and not be judge.
